LA BATTAGLIA DELLA MARSAGLIA

On the 4th of October 1693, the armies of the Duke of Savoy Vittorio Amedeo II and Louis XIV of France (known as the "Sun King") went into battle in the countryside between Volvera, Orbassano and Piossasco. The Duke of Savoy engaged 25,000 men against the 37,000 troops under the command of the French general Nicolas Catinat. The heroic and bloody battle claimed over 12,000 lives and left a long trail of devastation and loss.

Every year, Volvera commemorates the epic Battle of Marsaglia with a historical re-enactment, amidst evocative assaults with rifles and cannons. The scheduled events include topical conferences, theatrical performances, reconstructions of military camps, markets with products of the time, music, dancing and scenes from everyday life.
