CRONACHE D'ALTRI TEMPI

San Giusto and Sant'Aurelio are the patron saints of Galliate. Their remains, moved in 1646 from the Roman cemetery of Caledopio, were the subject of a series of donations in the five years that followed: from the Pope to a Roman noblewoman, from the latter to the Marchioness Maria Aldobrandina Sforza, from the Marchioness to the parish church of Galliate. The precious relics were transferred to the church with solemn honours in the presence of thirty thousand people: it was the most important event of the 17th century in Galliate.

Today Galliate celebrates its patron saints with an evocative historical re-enactment, during which the four neighbourhoods of the town compete for the Palio dei Santi Martiri in a heated tournament with knightly displays of weapons and contests of skill.
