Forte Varisello - Lago del Moncenisio

The Moncenisio lake, a dam built around the '70s, located at an altitude of 2083 meters, almost on the boundary between the Valle di Susa and the French Valle delle Maurielle is a place of incomparable beauty. Surrounded by imposing peaks is the ideal destination for those enjoying walks in the outdoors. Near the dam there are various historical fortifications that make the place even more fascinating.

A few meters from the dam is Forte Varisello. Built between 1877 and 1880, it was the cornerstone of defense of the border plateau. Today it looks like a pentagonal construction in a pit with two firing levels, able to accommodate cannons and howitzers, deposits, troops and supplies. Because of the artillery evolution, however, soon the whole complex became obsolete, not having a structure able to withstand the impact with the new hollow charge projectiles. It was decided not to upgrade it to adapt it to the new principles in force at the time and was used as a target for artillery fire during some tests carried out in 1910 to study the effects of the new cannons on older forts with the aim of devising new and more effective building techniques.

Road access: From Turin follow the A32 Torino-Bardonecchia, then continue on the SS25 towards Susa/Moncenisio. Cross Susa and, after passing Giaglione, take the SP 212 until reaching Plaine StNicolas, where you can look for parking.

Route: After leaving your car, where the snow-covered road begins, follow the path that reaches the plateau beneath the dam of the lake, then bend towards the east to climb and reach the dam. Go along the whole dam until you reach the keeper's house and then bend towards the Fort of Varisello at an altitude of  2106.
