Fashion and music, culture and community. These are the ingredients of a packed weekend that will transform the picturesque Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Avigliana into a meeting place where fashion, creativity, dreams and talent will come together for a special afternoon dedicated to self-expression through the art of tailoring: ‘Personalità cucite su misura’ (Tailor-made Personalities) will take to the stage, a fashion show curated by JAVÌ – Jessica Avitabile’s School of Fashion and Tailoring, a local creative and educational institution which, in recent years, has successfully engaged people of all ages in discovering the world of fashion and sewing. The event pays tribute to Madeleine Vionnet, one of the most revolutionary figures in 20th-century fashion, whose 150th birthday is being marked this year: she is regarded as a pioneer of haute couture and one of the women who helped to profoundly transform the way women dress and perceive their bodies. Founder of the prestigious Maison Vionnet, Madeleine liberated women from the rigid corsets and constricting structures of nineteenth-century fashion, introducing a new concept of elegance based on freedom of movement and the natural enhancement of the figure. Her most famous innovation was the revolutionary bias cut, a technique involving cutting the fabric at a 45-degree angle to the warp and weft: a method still widely used today, which produces fluid, soft and form-fitting garments that move naturally with the body. The iconic evening gowns worn by Hollywood divas in the 1930s and 1940s remain a testament to this today. Accompanying the fashion show will be the young piano talent Samuele Tozzi, who will help to create an elegant and captivating atmosphere.
