Fuori, written, directed and performed by Annamaria Troisi, is a dramatic monologue that explores the complex world of eating disorders with brutal honesty. The play tells the story of a wounded and humiliated body, which the protagonist perceives as a Pandora’s box brimming with the world’s fragilities and evils. The viewer takes on the role of a silent witness who observes his obsessions, eavesdrops on his phone calls and watches helplessly as the beast takes over – that voracious impulse that overrides the will. The language, deliberately unfiltered and at times brutal, rejects all sentimentality to denounce social hypocrisy, the weight of stereotypes and the pain of constantly feeling out of place: out of place, out of proportion, out of control. Through the skilful use of voice-over and references to contemporary culture (from social media to digital loneliness), the play transforms the protagonist’s gut into the centre of a desperate struggle for her own identity. The text concludes with an imaginary dialogue between the little girl of the past and her mother, sealing a story that speaks to anyone who has ever felt they no longer have a place in the world.
