GIARDINI DI VILLA SAN REMIGIO

Villa San Remigio lies on the top of Colle della Castagnola, and it overlooks the Lago Maggiore (Lake Maggiore) from its gardens. This garden was designed and created by a couple: the Irish painter Sofia Browne and the poet and musician Silvio Della Valle di Casanova. Beginning from 1896, the couple created a garden that had to be a shelter for as well as a reflection of their feelings. At the same time, they transformed an old chalet into a villa. Various styles of gardens can be seen in the park: Italian, English and medieval, as well as an orchard and a wood. The two artists chose plants, colours and scents that would arouse as strong feelings and emotions as their art did. The garden, in fact, mirrors the eclectic taste of its owners: we can see the garden of melancholy that counterpoints the garden of happiness, the garden of memory and that of sighs. We can walk through wide English style spaces, to then find ourselves in the hortus conclusus, where the atmosphere is more intimate and spiritual thanks to the small Romanesque church of San Remigio. Various famous personalities stayed in the villa, among whom Gabriele D’Annunzio and the futurist painter Umberto Boccioni who painted here his lake landscapes.
