BLACK POPLAR OF CONIOLO

Despite its advanced age, less than a century old but still a remarkable achievement for the species, the Poplar has maintained its habitus as a large tree with a height of 30 m and a columnar trunk with a diameter of about 2 metres at chest height. However, the botanical characteristics do not seem to be typical of the species (Populus nigra) and it is therefore suspected to be a hybridisation with the clonal poplar. The monumental tree stands on the riverbank of Porti, the ancient port of call of the ferry on the River Po, which has always been the destination of walks for the people of Morano of all ages. You can reach the wood from the village and then proceed to the river along the "miners' trail", an old track through which the quarry workers, but also the women who worked in the paddy fields and the "arsigat", seasonal woodcutters, used to walk.
