BEECH OF SAN GIACOMO DI ENTRACQUE

The specimen originates from a large stump from which two of the various suckers that formed merged into two trunks. The trunks, both with a diameter of over one and a half metres, are now column-shaped and the canopy is spherical and harmoniously developed. In spite of its impressive size, the aerial part of this splendid specimen cannot be more than 130 years old, as testified by some photos by Giuseppe Bargis dated 1883, which show the original, and much older, stump, with the young suckers, near Hunting Lodge. The flat surface and the nature of the fresh, deep soil contributed to the remarkable growth of the suckers, which were also protected by the construction and the particular frequentation of the Hunting Lodge. Originally there were three beeches: the first one crashed to the ground about ten years ago, while the second, severely compromised by a falling sucker, has been removed from the national list of trees.
