One of the most scenic routes in Italy is the Lago Maggiore Marathon, a competitive and non-competitive marathon around Lake Maggiore in Verbania.
For race lovers at high altitude, a really spectacular race that travels past some of the most beautiful points of the Verbano Cusio Ossola Mountains is the "International Bettelmatt Sky Race", a race in Val Formazza on the Lepontine Alps, so called because it was set up with the idea of going through, or at least passing alongside, all the pastures where the famous cheese is produced from which the Bettelmatt takes its name. With its breathtaking technical race course and wonderful natural environment, the Royal Ultra Sky Marathon is also a real grand prize in mountain running. The route winds through the wild nature of Gran Paradiso, along the tracks of the royal hunting roads crossing five hills at about 3000 m.
