Le strade del vino in Piemonte

Piemonte, the land of wine par excellence, with 45,000 hectares of vineyards, 20,000 wineries and three million hectolitres of wine produced annually, boasts 17 DOCG and 42 DOC wines, famous all over the world. To visit wineries and taste the home-grown varieties directly from the producer you can follow the Wine Roads that cross the entire regional territory. Here are the ones recognised, at the moment, in Piemonte:

  • STRADA DEL VINO ALTO MONFERRATO
The Wine Route of Alto Monferrato is among the wine roads that are richest in historical testimonies and wine-making traditions of Piemonte. It winds through beautiful landscapes, castles, ancient villages full of charm, crossing three large areas: the Acqui Terme region, which extends west, the Ovada region, in the heart of the Alto Monferrato, and the Novi Ligure region, located in the Eastern part. In these territories, red wines prevail: Barbera, Grignolino, Freisa, Ruché, Malvasia di Casorzo and other local varieties, including sparkling wines like Brachetto. However, there is no lack of good whites, like Gavi.
  • STRADA DEL VINO ASTESANA
This wine road is the viticultural heart of Piemonte, because this land alone produces 30% of wines in the Region. The characteristic of these wine hills is the excellent quality of its wide range of products, covering the whole variety of gastronomic services: from “brut” sparkling wines to dry white wines, from light reds to those more structured for ageing, to aromatic whites and reds, including the passito type and concluding with spirits (especially grappa). The most important wine of Astesana is Barbera d'Asti.

  • STRADA DEL VINO MONFERRATO ASTIGIANO
In the Monferrato, wine-making has achieved excellence, successfully merging tradition and innovation. In fact, the area boasts many varieties of wine, both local and international, all of impeccable quality. Perfect in combination with local products, obtained from those controlled supply chains, from the field to the table, which make them so special. A welcoming, genuine and lively land that, throughout the year, offers culture, entertainment and fun to visitors of all ages.

  • STRADA DEL VINO COLLI TORTONESI
A varied landscape: this is how the Tortonese region appears to its visitors, with soft hills that fade into imposing peaks. Already to the French writer Stendhal, the pre-Apennine range had appeared "a splendid road, with almost always a mountain perspective...". Wine making, which is one of the main items of the Tortona Hills economy, contributes decisively to the typical nature of the landscape. Taking advantage of the high agronomic, climatic and oenological potential of the soil, local producers obtain fine wines that respect the variety of grapes present in the Tortona variety, i.e. grapevines of cultural and agricultural significance.

  • STRADA DEL BAROLO E GRANDI VINI DI LANGA
The Road of Barolo and great wines of the Langhe is a route recognised in 2006 that crosses the hills of the Langa del Barolo, includes wineries and farms to offer tourists the opportunity to meet the "king" of wines in the very sites of its production. An exciting journey in the heart and spirit of the Langhe, in which the undisputed protagonist is wine, but in the background of the beautiful landscapes a heritage of culture and tradition emerges.

  • STRADA REALE DEI VINI TORINESI
The Royal Road of Torino Wines is a circuit that allows visitors to discover the 25 DOC wines of the province, obtained from 11 characteristic vineyards, with tastings taking place in the numerous wineries and farms spread throughout the territory, in the 2 Regional Wineries of Roppolo and Caluso, true temples of local wine production, and in the Bottega del Vino inside the Museo del Gusto of Frossasco. The Road is made unique also by the presence, along its route, of the splendid Corona di Delizie (Crown of delights): from the Royal Palace of Venaria to the Castle of Rivoli, from the Hunting Palace of Stupinigi to the Palazzo Ducale of Agliè. Those who love wine are rewarded by a visit to the most beautiful Royal Residences of Piemonte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • STRADA DEL VINO "DOGLIANI"
The production area of the Dogliani DOCG is located in the south of Piemonte, in the southern part of the Langhe that, in this case, is the higher and fresher area since it is close to the mountains of the Ligurian Apennines and the Maritime Alps. It is the most congenial climate for Dolcetto, which suffers from excessive heat and retains its delicate aromas only with a particular temperature balance.
