VERNANTE, IL BORGO DI PINOCCHIO

20 kilometres from Cuneo lies Vernante, a small village that has become known because a hundred scenes from the story of Pinocchio by Collodi were drawn on the walls of its houses and in its streets.

Attilio Mussino, the most famous illustrator of Collodi's character, nicknamed for this "Pinocchio's uncle," lived right here in Vernante the last years of his life.

To pay him tribute, in July 1954, two Vernante residents, Bartolomeo Cavallera and Bruno Carletto, known by the nickname of "the Cat and the Fox," decided to revive scenes from the novel by drawing them on the walls.

Over the years, the murals have multiplied and today there are more than one hundred and fifty illustrations peeping out of the walls, the doors and the windows, making this place a fairy tale place.
