TORRE DI MONCANINO

Perhaps few people know that in Turin, in addition to the Mole Antonelliana, there is another tower, built in 1857, designed by Alessandro Antonelli.

Right in via Moncanino, in San Mauro, a village nestled in the Torino hill, there is the Tower of Moncanino, a neo-gothic style building from the second half of the nineteenth century.

The architecture is quite bizarre, with pointed windows and balconies. It has seven sides, is completely built in bricks and reaches a height of 52 metres. On the top stands a metallic angel that indicates the direction of the wind.

The emblem of the household is represented by two lions rampant with a crown and symbolise a high social status. The monument is said to have been used to enjoy the beautiful panorama of the Torino hills during the parties organised at the end of the nineteenth century in Villa Soley, an elegant neoclassical building adjoining the tower.

The tower is private property, currently not open to the public.
