PIAN DEL RE, DOVE NASCE IL PO

The name of Pian del Re is traced back to the fact that here, at the time of Francis I of France, arose the encampments of the French army engaged in the invasion of the Duchy of Savoy. Today the area, which is part of the Monviso Park, has received UNESCO recognition as the Monviso Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, and is a special habitat, characterized by peat bog, home to the rare black Lanza salamander, grazing animals and many marmots.

But Pian del Re is best known for the Springs of the Po: it is in this very place, in fact, that the longest river in Italy was born.

The springs of the Po River at Pian del Re can be reached by a very short flat walk, about ten minutes from the parking lot.
