PALAZZO NATTA E I CIABATTINI

The shape of the tower found in Palazzo Natta, overlooking Piazza Matteotti in the heart of Novara, seems to resemble that of a cobbler's disk. Not surprisingly, until the early decades of the twentieth century, Novara, called "City of Sciavatin", sported the University of Shoemakers. In fact, in the past the shoemakers had the most powerful guild in the city, so much so that they granted loans to the municipality itself and received in return the square on which they performed their trade.

The palace was built by the Counts Caccia of Mandello and Castellazzo, a noble family from Novara, and later passed to the Natta d'Alfiano and Natta Isola families of Casale.

In 1873 the Municipality decided to move the clock from the church of San Carlo right into the tower of Palazzo Natta Novara, after the demolition of the church that was located in front of the city hall. Later, engineer Dell'Ara added the crowning.

Of particular note is the garden, which underwent a conservative restoration in 1998, where a beautiful fountain made of pink marble from Baveno is in the centre.
