NOVARA E IL FANTASMA DI CELESTINA

Legend has it that in Novara, in the first half of the 1800s, one day a blacksmith surnamed Mazzagat, whose workshop was located on Vicolo Canonica, accidentally killed his mistress Celestina, with whom he quarrelled daily.

Mazzagat was immediately arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment, but in spite of this, it is said that poor Celestina 's soul in pain continued for years to wander around the alley at night with her face covered by a black veil, to cast misfortune on passers-by.

To end this period of terror, which forced the people of Novara indoors after dark, one day someone hung on the wall in front of the entrance to what had been the workshop of Mazzagat aterracotta image of Our Lady, still visible in the alley. From that time on, it is said that no one met Celestina's ghost again.
