LE COSTE DI BIELLA

The coste of Biella are characteristic narrow streets that descend from Borgo del Piazzo down to the flat city; the coste were formerly the only accesses to the Borgo before the construction of the funicular railway.
During the Middle Ages, in both episcopal and communal times, the coste were passable through the gates of Andorno, Ghiara, and Torrazza, later rebuilt in 1780, which were closed at night to protect the hamlet.
All coste have a characteristic cobblestone pavement covering; the main ones are the Costa del Piazzo; the Costa delle Noci; the Costa di S. Sebastiano; the Costa del Vernato.
Through the proposed itinerary, the visitor can walk among the coste located in the south-east area of Borgo.
