LA LEGGENDA SU SAN GAUDENZIO

Tradition has it that on 22 January 396 AD Ambrose, bishop of Milan, returning from a trip to Vercelli on his way to the Lombard capital, however, stopped halfway due to his horses refusing to continue.

Ambrose welcomed the fact as a divine sign and decided to stop in Novara, where Bishop Gaudentius welcomed him. The Novarese, however, did not have much to offer the great Milanese: so, by a miracle, a wonderful rose garden bloomed in his garden amidst the snow.

Tradition still remembers the miracle to this day through the Rose Ceremony: every year the City of Novara takes charge of cleaning the roses on the chandelier of the basilica, where they are repositioned and blessed by the bishop of Novara precisely on 22 January, before the solemn mass in honour of St. Gaudentius.
