LA GROTTA DI ANNIE

At the gates of Borgosesia stands the massive limestone-dolomitic block of Monte Fenera, which constitutes a protected area of 3378 hectares and that, for its profile, is recognisable from the Novara and Vercelli plain.

In addition to chestnut woods and beech forests, the Fenera has been the subject of archaeological studies. Being a place frequented in prehistoric times by Neanderthal men, many findings testify the constant presence of human activities in ancient times.

In the caves, which go into the mountain for hundreds of meters, remains of prehistoric fauna have been found, including the cave bear.

A curiosity: a female skeleton of the late ancient era was found in the cave of Annie, as well as protohistoric ceramic remains that span the metal ages: copper, bronze and iron, which began about eight thousand years ago.
