LA FORTEZZA PIU' ALTA D'EUROPA: LO CHABERTON

Mount Chaberton, between Italy and France, dominates from its 3131 metres the Dauphiné, the peaks of the Valle Stretta, the Rognosa d'Ethiache and the coast of the Assietta-Rocciavrè.

This geographical location was considered perfect for the construction of the colossal fort, which was defined as the highest in Europe, located just below the flat and vast summit of the mountain.

The works ended on the eve of the First World War. For this reason, the new building was equipped with eight cannons, installed under the steel armours placed on turrets so that the snow does would not impede the swinging of the fire mouths. It was also decided to provide the fort with a cableway and a carriage road.

Today you can visit the remains of the building, following, on foot or by bike, the path that starts from Fenils, a hamlet in Cesana Torinese, and which in about four hours reaches the summit of the mountain.
