LA FINTA PORTA DEL MASTIO

More than 200 masks made on the exterior facades of buildings can be found in Turin. One of the most grotesque masks, however, can be found at the Keep Mastio della Cittadella, the only existing Renaissance public building in the city and former fortress designed in 1564 by Paciotto for Emanuele Filimberto to honour the city that had become the capital of the Duchy of Savoy.

The most curious thing, actually, is that the mask was made on a fake door! Still today, with its symbolic grimace, that plaster face seems to want to mock all those who mistakenly had the intention to enter for that deceptive entrance.
