LA COLONNA CHE SUDA

The people of Novara call it the "cülóna ch'la suda"...

On seeing it, one cannot say that it is beautiful, it is just a remnant of a rough column, without any decoration, embedded in a wall, held together by an iron lath.

Yet, it is the most famous column in Novara, so much so that in front of it the elegance of the columns of the nearby arcades of Via Rosselli disappears, the shine of the columns of the buildings on Corso Cavour fades, the haughtiness of the columns of the Cathedral pales.

All this because that sandstone column, put there, nobody knows by whom, in the distant Middle Ages, at the mouth of the tunnel that gives access to Vicolo Canonica, is the "sweating column" observed, studied, caressed over the centuries, by countless people.

In fact, for several years now, everyone who passes by it, some stealthily or some even stopping, has been brushing against it to feel whether it is dry or wet, because, it is said, it has the peculiarity of "marking time" several hours in advance by becoming damp in bad weather.
