L’INCONTRO TRA I VIVI E I MORTI ALL’ABBAZIA DI VEZZOLANO

In the cloister of the Vezzolano Abbey, a Romanesque building, one of the most important in Piedmont, located in the municipality of Albugnano in the province of Asti , there is a curious fresco from the 1300s: the meeting between three living men and three dead men.

The vision is included on the third level of a larger depiction featuring Christ and an adoration of the Magi above.

Below the three dead of Vezzolano can be seen rising from the graves placed next to the church. They appear to want to shed the shroud to show themselves to three knights. In the scene on the left, the three armed knights, engaged in a hunting game, react shocked at the appearance of the dead bodies. One tries to change his way, another tries to cover his face, and the third hides his face behind his palms. The terror of the knights is also transmitted to the animals: the horses soar and dogs bark. At the centre of the fresco appears the figure of a hermit saint showing skeletons to gentlemen.
