IL RE DI PIETRA, IL MONVISO

Also known as the " Stone King," Monviso, the "clearly visible mountain," has been included since 2016 in the Monviso Natural Park, on the Italian side, while on the French side it is incorporated by the Queyras Natural Park.

Known since antiquity, Monviso has always attracted attention because of its soaring shape and predominance over the considerably lower surrounding mountains.

The first attempt to approach it is that of the Milanese abbot Valeriano Castiglione, dating back to 1627. However, the goal of the expedition was not to reach the summit as much as to measure its height.

The abbot Castiglione, having departed from the Saluzzo plain, where the Po Valley begins, reached the slopes of the mountain, stopping near Lake Chiaretto where he took measurements and calculated a height of about 3925 meters.
