IL PONTE MEIER SOSPESO SUL FIUME TANARO

The new Merier Bridge, which bears the signature of the U.S. architect Richard Meier is a single-span steel structure of nearly 177meters. It connects the city centre with the Citadel Fortress.

It was designed to replace the old Napoleonic bridge, which was demolished a few years ago due to flood damage, the bridge consists of three main elements: the arch, the platform intended for pedestrian transit, and the platform intended for vehicular transit, separated from each other.

A curiosity: the curved structure was created to emphasize the relationship between the bridge and the water. “The flow of water," explained the American architect, "is not straight but flows in a curve, so the bridge is curved in relation to the flow of water, and accompanies it. The two spaces created at the height of the river are for citizens to get closer to the water, to reclaim their river.”
