GLI INDIANI IROCHESI DI PIAZZA CARIGNANO

Perhaps not everyone knows that Guarini made some masks on the windows of Palazzo Carignano, first Parliament of the Kingdom of Italy, depicting tribal leaders of Indians. These masks are dedicated to the 1667 victory of the Piedmont soldiers, flanked by French soldiers, over the Iroquois Indians.

The Iroquois people fascinated the Piedmont soldiers in no small part both by their appearance and their traditions and courage shown on the field.

When they returned to Europe, in fact, the soldiers brought with them drawings and portraits of the Native Americans, some of which were taken as gifts to the royal family.

The American Indian "fashion" spread and reached Guarini, who decided to immortalize this page of history in the facade of Palazzo Carignano a few years later.
