GIORDANINO PASTRY SHOP AND ITS DELICIOUS CAKES

For those who are in Asti, a stop at the delicious and elegant Pasticceria Giordanino, located in Corso Alfieri, in the heart of the city, where the two typical cakes of the city were born: the Polentina delle tre Mandorle and the Torta del Palio.

The store was opened in 1912 by Giuseppe Giordanino, who remained the sole owner until the early 1980s, when he was replaced by Nello Maggiora.

Today the store still retains the atmosphere of the past, the original Art Nouveau furnishings welcome customers in a whirlwind of delicacies.

Typical products of the city alternate with cakes and pastries of a thousand flavors, a wide assortment of pralines and dry pastries to satisfy every palate.

LA POLENTINA DELLE TRE MANDORLE (THE POLENTA OF THE THREE ALMONDS)

This is the oldest and most original confectionery specialty of Asti. Created in 1928 by the skilful hands of master pastry chef Giordanino. It owes its success to the right mix of simple and first-rate ingredients: eggs, sugar, flour, butter, almonds, maraschino, raisins.

It replaces the homonymous specialties popular in Piedmont, such as Polenta Dolce Biellese, for the replacement of corn flour with a mix of wheat flour and almonds, which is used to knead a soft cake, reminiscent of sponge cake, soaked in Maraschino liqueur, enriched with raisins and garnished with chopped almonds.

TORTA DEL PALIO

Ten years after the Polentina, in 1938, master pastry chef Giordanino gave life to another cake, the torta del Palio. The chef was inspired by a cake that housewives used to prepare in ancient times on the occasion of the famous Palio race in Asti, since 1275, and the result was a soft daisy cake flavored with Amaretto liqueur and covered with chocolate.

This cake is also enriched with Luxardo liqueur and covered with nuggets of pure dark chocolate.

TORTA CABIRIA

Another specialty is Torta Cabiria, with its dark chocolate, candied orange and praline almonds, evoking the title of the first silent film shot in Italy, Cabiria, directed by Giovanni Pastrone from Asti.
