The Conte Verde (Green Count)

In front of the Palazzo di Città (Town Hall), in the square with the same name, there is a statue of the Conte Verde (Green Count).  This nickname was given to Amedeo VI of Savoia (Savoy), who was a prominent figure in Tornio (Turin) during the fourteenth century.

The monument, which depicts the count during the victorious battle against the Turks, was built in 1853.

The legend explains that the nickname of the sovereign derives from the color of the clothes worn during the tenzoni (lyric poetry battles) and the tournaments that he was always victorious in. Also the trappings of the horse were green, on which he paraded on towards the stage after each race, to pay homage to the most beautiful lady.  The young man, considered himself a skillful conqueror, he liked his nickname so much that even as a sovereign he continued to wear clothes of the same color.
