L’ARTE DELLA COSTRUZIONE IN PIETRA A SECCO: CONOSCENZA E TECNICHE

"Transnational" element including in addition to Italy also Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland

Entered in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity UNESCO in 2018 (13.COM)

The art of dry stone construction refers to the knowledge required to build artifacts with the exclusive use of stone and without making use of any binder (mortar and cement) apart from, sometimes, the use of earth. The stability of the structures made of dry stone is guaranteed by the capacity to choose and lay the stones in an "artful" manner.

The dry-stone structures are present in many rural areas both inside and outside the built-up areas. These structures testify to methods and practices used continuously from prehistoric times to the present day to better organize their places of living and dwelling.

The bearers of knowledge and those who continue to use it are mainly people who belong to the rural communities where the artifacts are located, such as farmers and craftsmen working in the construction industry.

Dry-stone constructions are always built in deep harmony with the surrounding natural environment, and the construction technique represents an admirable blend of this

For Piedmont, two organizations that work to safeguard and pass on the intangible element recognized by UNESCO have been included in the recognition:

  • The Building System Training and Safety of Verbano Cusio Ossola
  • ITLA ITALIA APS (International Terraced Landscape Alliance - ITALY), the national section of an international movement that has placed at the center of its objectives the knowledge, awareness and enhancement of terraced landscapes. In 2017, the Association gives birth to the Italian School of Dry Stone, believing in the need to build a widespread system capable of transmitting correctly and effectively the construction technique, using experienced craftsmen and in tune with UNESCO principles. Since 2019, the registered office of ITLA ITALIA APS is in Cortemilia (CN).
