The need to prevent the approach of an enemy force from the fortress at the bottom of the valley was the basis of the construction, on both sides, with some detached defense works. The Batteria Serziera was built between 1885 and 1887 on the left side of Vinadio barrier, with a "T" plan, organized on three levels and defended on three sides by a moat. Two cannons next to the entrance portal, two on the side towards Vinadio and four in beard towards the upper Valle Stura constituted the main armament.
Behind the batteria the gatehouse of the sources was built in 1890, with the task of avoiding the circumvention of the Serziera. Capable of accommodating 160 men, the work defended the road towards the Batteria Piroat direction by means of a double row of loopholes on the north façade, on either side of the entrance. An earthen vault stood opposite where it was possible to establish a battery of mortars whenever necessary.
In 1897 the Batteria Piroat was built, with the aim of increasing the firepower of the Serziera. Some underground rooms housed ammunition depots, while a tunnel of about 100 meters led to the loading laboratory.
Other works were represented by the 24 Trune di Cima Trent, in support of the defense troops of the sector, the Cima Rimà defensive barracks, with about 40 men and the Trinceramenti di testa Rimà, of 1888, the first line of defense in high altitude against attacks directed to the Batteria Serziera.
