OULX, FORTE PRAMAND (2153m.) -costruito nel 1905

Military road from Fenil to Monte Jafferau

Reachable by car on a dirt road to the Pramand collar, then walk up to the fort.

Once arrived at the Pramand collar, you will see the remains of the homonymous Baraccamento, built in 1903. Following the road are the remains of the occasional Battery Pramand, a flanking work carried out together with the fort that could house 4 cannons of 149 mm. Continuing along the road you reach the Fort's square. The work was created by creating a step in the rocky body of the mountain where the concrete structure was located. On the ground floor, you will find the logistical rooms, the warehouses and the garrison's lodgings, and thanks to a flight of stairs you could reach the first floor where a corridor is connected to different installations with the reserve. The fort was armed with 4 149-mm cannons. installed in a rotating lenticular Armstrong domes, with the Oulx plain as a shooting range. Beside the fort was a concrete tunnel that led to the powder magazine, dug into the bowels of the mountain. With concrete and steel construction, it was attempted to oppose the last resistance against the power of modern artillery at that time, an attempt that miserably failed the firing test during the First World War, where installations were very similar to that of Pramand, like the forts Verena and Campolongo on the Asiago plateau, they were swept away by the Austrian guns, howitzers and mortars, caliber 305, 381 and 420 mm. On the western Alps there were only three installations of this type: the forts, the Court, the Paradiso al Moncenisio and Pramand, today largely destroyed and now in French territory. These installations on the Western and Eastern Alps, had a similar structure and varied only in adaptation to the ground and in the model of artillery and dome.
