OULX, FORTE FOENS (2205 m.) 1897-1899

Road to Forte Foens da Savoulx: Reachable by gravel road from Savoulx.

The fort was erected to increase the defenses of the Bardonecchia basin. The armament provided four 149 mm pieces in beard aimed at the upper valley, while two other 149 mm pieces, still in beard, were lined up on the side, towards Oulx. Under the line of the pieces there were warehouses and rooms for the troops, connected to the underground powder keg from which it was possible to transport the ammunition by freight elevator. Within the perimeter of the fort, protected by a wall with loopholes and small bastions for flanking, there were deposits and barracks able to accommodate 300 men and 20 pack animals.
