CASTELLO SANNAZZARO

More unique than rare in Italian history and in the history of Monferrato as well, the Castello di Giarole has always belonged to a single family – the Sannazzaro family. Imposing, with a quadrilateral layout, famous for the 4 towers that break up the even flow of the sides of the castle, it has been destroyed and reconstructed several times. In the 18th century, the southern wing, with the balcony where Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II stood on the eve of the Second War of Independence, was renovated. Pier Francesco Guala’s pictorial contribution dates back to that period, while the Neo-Gothic renovation, in keeping with the tastes of the time, took place between 1854 and 1857. At this time, Count Giacinto Sannazzaro Natta called in Paolo Emilio Margari and Andrea Gastaldi to decorate the large entrance hall, the main staircase, the dance hall, and various other rooms.
