CASTELLO DI MONTIGLIO MONFERRATO

The Montiglio Castle (Castello di Montiglio), which, from its hill, dominates the town, dates back to the 13th century. The present structure, with its irregular “L-shape” and elongated linear layout, is what remains of the more complex structure that originally had a “U-shape” layout and included a keep in the center of a forepart that spread out in front of the bridge in order to better use the defensive characteristics. The bastions are instead the result of the work carried out during the 16th century. Originally a three-storey construction defended by a sturdy surrounding wall built in 1481 at the order of the Marquis Guglielmo VIII, the castle underwent significant reconstruction during the XVIII century. In order to give residential dignity to the castle, a large staircase, an elegant hall with an oval floor plan called the “Music Room”, and a terrace with a tower above were constructed, as well as a portico that opens to a garden where a striking labyrinth created with laurel bushes and boxwood is found.
