CASTELLO DI MASSAZZA

The document that cites the place and the presence of a tower in Massazza dates back to 1239 and refers to an event in the war between the City and the Bishop of Vercelli. Because of its strategic position, Massazza was, in fact, often the reason for conflict and the place where various powers clashed until al least 1400 when the Avogadro family, by swearing an oath of faith to the Savoy, allowed for a period of relative tranquility. Once beyond the main entrance, there is a large, high square tower crenellated on top where the roof rests - this is one of the fort's more interesting constructions. On the south side, more recent structures are found, including the one with the spiral staircase. Inside the castle is the ancient chapel dedicated to Santa Anna, cited as far back as 1298 as one of the churches in diocese of Vercelli.
