CASTELLO DI MALABAILA

Castello Malabaila, surrounded by centuries-old oak trees is situated in the centre of the town, the most important comune of Roero. Built in 1270, to defend the town, at the beginning of the XVI century it was acquired by the Malabayla di Castellinaldo family, also acquiring the title of Counts of Canale. During their rule it was extended and transformed into an elegant residence. The proprietary family included illustrious figures such as Baldracco, bishop of Asti between 1348 and 1364, Filippo, General of the Cistercian Order in 1635, historian and expert in civic and church history; but above all the rest emerges Luigi Girolamo (1704-1773), Count of Canale, for forty years ambassador of the King of Sardinia Carlo Emanuele III in Vienna and a prominent figure on the eighteenth century Enlightenment political stage. Currently the complex appears as an enormous parallelepipedal structure with medieval characteristic elements and sixteenth-seventeenth century details. Now given over as a private residence it also houses a wine tasting and sales outlet.
