CASTELLO DI CORTANZE

Still today, the structure has its original irregular trapezoid design with two small towers located on the southwestern side and a major cylindrical tower topped with merlons. The entire building is surrounded by a park which is reached by a Baroque ramp and gate. Once through the garden, dominated by a keep, one enters the bastions which face the hills on one side and the inner courtyard on the other. Recently, the castle was entirely restored by the present owner in order to turn it into a refined hospitality structure. The castle’s origins date back to the 10th century when it was still Curtis Anseris, a residential hamlet created from a land possession of Franco-Lombard origin. Over the centuries, the building has seen various changes in ownership: from the bishop of Asti to the Roero family, who held on to the property until the end of the 10th century.
