SANTUARIO DI DON BOSCO

Next to Saint John Bosco's native home, there is the complex of the Istituto Salesiano, including the small Chiesa di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, the Santuario dedicated to Don Bosco, the Museum of Ethnography and of Salesian missions in the world and the museum of farming life in the 19th century. The nucleus of the complex is the immense sanctuary, which includes the Upper and the Lower churches; these are buildings erected in the 1950s as a re-interpretation (mostly in reinforced concrete) of previous models. They are preceded by a large square destined to host the crowds of the faithful on the occasion of pilgrimages. At the entrance of the upper church there is an expressive monument formed by a bronze statue of Don Bosco, dedicated to him by the Italian teachers' association in 1929.
