COLLEGIATA DEI S.S. GERVASIO E PROTASIO

The Collegiata (collegiate church) built in the years between 1792 and 1798 following a design by the architect Matteo Zucchi, has three naves and six chapels, while the façade, not completed until 1953, is the work of the architect Giovanni Greppi. The little Baroque portico and the Romanesque door which belong to the ancient collegiate church are noteworthy. The interior frescos are the work of the painter Lorenzo Peretti (1774-1851). On the high altar is a large crucifix, a masterpiece by the maestro Giorgio de Bernardis da Buttogno to whom the statues of the Santi Patroni (Patron Saints) in the chapel to the right of the high altar are also attributed. The large painting in the choir, which depicts San Gervasio, San Protasio, and the Madonna Assunta is the work of the painter from Vigezzo, Carlo Giuseppe Borgnis called Sparsicin (1738-1804). In the chapel of San Carlo, located along the nave to the right, is the painting “San Carlo che comunica gli apprendistati” (“Saint Charles Speaking to the Apprendices”) by the painter from Val Sesia, Antonio d’Enrico, called Tanzio (1575 ca. – 1635).
