CHIESA DI SAN CRISTOFORO

Only the apse and the lantern-tower remain of the original structure dating back to the 16th century. The rest of the complex was either built of reworked during the 18th century. The interior, consisting of three naves, has a valuable fresco cycle by Gaudenzio Ferrari done between 1529 and 1534 which embellishes the chapel of the Maddalena, the chapel of the Assunta, the presbytery, and the apse. The crucifix, which restyles a theme already seen in Varallo and the admirable Assunta (Assumption) remain among the most significant and mature works by the monumental Italian painter and form one of the major attractions within Vercelli’s artistic heritage.
