CHIESA DELLA MADONNA DEL PILONE

Situated on Corso Casale, between the road which goes towards Chieri and the banks of the River Po, it is a valuable example of religious, suburban architecture from the 17th century. Its origins are, however, more ancient and refer to a devotional pillar placed on the road in 1587 and regarded as being miraculous from 1644. A first, modest chapel built around it was soon regarded as inadequate and was replaced by the remarkable current church. It was opened for worship in 1645 by order of the reigning Cristina di Francia, then the church was enlarged in 1779; in 1804, the roof was enlarged and, in 1807, after being inherited by the parish (to replace the Sassi church, which was then reconstructed in 1821), it was fitted with a baptistery. The structure of the edifice is simple, even in its majesty, which is characterised by a dome above a high octagonal tambour which is very clear from the outside. The facade, which is very elegant, is divided into three registers. The baptistery (built in 1807) is conserved in its original form with its frescoes, attributed to Vacca.
