This church was commissioned by the Pia Congregazione dei Banchieri e dei Mercanti (Pious Congregation of Bankers and Merchants), and was inaugurated in 1692. It represents an important example of a private commission. Among the most significant works of art are the high altar, designed by Filippo Juvarra, and the frescoes of the sacristy by Antonio Milocco. There is one particular curiosity: the tomb of Joseph De Maistre is located inside the church, on the left hand side of the entrance. Joseph De Maistre was a Freemason writer in the service of the Savoy monarchy and was the brother of Xavier, who was highly regarded by Manzoni and was the author of “Viaggio intorno alla mia stanza” (Trip around my room), written while under house arrest to which he had been condemned by the Savoy authorities for political reasons.
