BASILICA DI MARIA AUSILIATRICE

Founded by Don Bosco in 1865-68 and erected according to a design by Antonio Spezia, it belongs to the most decorative style of 19th-century eclectism, situated, with its expansive dome, in a position overlooking the whole of the Cottolengo complex, from the Casa della Divini Provvidenza to the Salesian buildings. It was last expanded in 1935-38 according to a design by Mario Ceradini and Giulio Vallotti. The facade is of a Neo-Palladian style and the statue of Mary rises from the top of the dome (the work of Camillo Boggio in 1867). The interior, with a single nave and richly decorated with polychrome marble, holds the clothes of San Giovanni Bosco. The fresco of the dome represents the Gloria della Vergine while the painting on the high altar, a work of Tommaso Lorenzone, depicts Mary Help of Christians.
