The Staffarda Abbey is an imposing abbey complex, founded in the XII century in a Romanesque style that includes a church, the monastic buildings and nine farms.

Founded between 1122 and 1138 on the territory of the ancient Marchesato of Saluzzo (Marquisate of Saluzzo), the Cistercian Benedictine Abbey in a few decades reached a considerable economic importance as a place of collection, transformation and exchange of the products of the surrounding countryside, made fertile by the monks with extensive and complex reclamation works.

The economic importance had brought to the abbey civil and ecclesiastical privileges that made it the reference of the political and social life of the territory. In 1690 the French, led by General Catinat invaded the Abbey destroying the archive, the library, part of the cloister and the refectory; from 1715 to 1734, with the financial help of Vittorio Amedeo II, restoration work was carried out which partly altered the original Gothic forms of the architecture.

With the Bolla Pontificia of Papa Benedetto XIV (Papal bull of Pope Benedict XIV), in 1750, the Abbey and its heritages became property of the Ordine of SS. Maurizio and Lazzaro (Order of Saints Maurizio and Lazzaro), and built in Commenda.

Of the abbey complex the Church is particularly appreciated, with the Polittico of Pascale Oddone (Polyptych of Pascale Oddone) and the sixteenth century wooden group of the Crucifixion, the Cloister, the Refectory, with traces of a painting depicting “L’ultima cena” ("The Last Supper") , the Chapter Hall, the Foresteria (monastery for passerby’s); the other buildings constitute the so-called "concentric" of Staffarda, i.e. the village, which still preserves the historical architectural structures that are functional for agricultural activity, such as the covered market in the square in front of the Abbey and the farms.
