It was built between 1874 and 1889 on the hill which overlooks the valley of Bardonecchia. Inside the Fort of Bramafam there is a museum of the Regio Esercito (Royal Army), where 38 rooms house a series of accurate environmental reconstructions, completed by 160 mannequins wearing original uniforms, 20 cannons of different ages and over 2000 finds of military life.

The length of the walls is about 1200 meters and the inside walkways, which extend on three levels, reach about 10 kilometres lengthwise. A part of the premises of the Forte houses the permanent exhibition “Montagna in movimento. Percorsi multimediali attraverso le Alpi” (Mountains in movement. Multimedia pathways through the Maritime Alps).
