Forte di Fenestrelle, Barbara Fondacaro @ “Publish your photo”
“It is rare that such an imposing work remains undamaged over the centuries, but in this case, history has made an exception, allowing everyone the possibility of a unique experience”. According to Piero Angela, who dedicated several televised reports to the Fenestrelle Fort, the importance of the Fort is not limited to its impressive walls or its historical date, but penetrates its interior. And if today it is possible to breathe in this atmosphere and to visit the Fort, it is thanks to the commitment of the Project San Carlo-Forte di Fenestrelle Association, which in 1990 worked enthusiastically on salvaging it, helping to save a masterpiece from the past and giving everyone the possibility to experience a fascinating adventure across the centuries. Besides this, it is one of the 18th century Piedmont forts which still has original architecture and it is located within the Orsiera-Rocciavre Regional Natural Park.
Here are facts about the largest fortified structure in Europe and the largest wall construction after the Great Wall of China: a 635 meter inclination, 3 kilometers long, an area of 1,300,000 square meters, 4,000 steps in the Covered Staircase, 2,500 steps in the Royal Staircase, 5 drawbridges, and 183 lights in the interior. It took 122 years to build the Fort.
