Oldenico (Vc)
This Reserve is called ‘the city of herons’ because the Isolone di Oldenico is one of the most populated ‘garzaia’ of Italy. The large island is located at the centre of the river Sesia, to the south of the wood of Albano Vercellese, and is home to poplars, willows and false acacias. In the spring many birds come from their wintering places to nest here, where human beings are not allowed. Little egrets, grey herons, night herons and cormorants form very large colonies, but there are also other more rare and more significant birds. Small cattle egret with white plumage, characteristic of the African savannah, cormorants and even some sacred ibises from the Nile choose, in fact, this island. All the species in the Reserve can be easily observed from outside.
