Ecomuseo della Pietra da Cantoni (Cella Monte)

This Ecomuseum highlights some the unique characteristics of the councils of the Monferrato Casalese area, which share the same historical, economic and social aspects, as well as an agricultural, wine-growing and producing tradition. One of the distinctive features of this territory is its unusual geology. Here, in fact, we can find great quantities of "Pietra da Cantoni" (Brick Stone), which is malleable marly-calcareous or silicious-calcareous sandstone, and crops out on most of the territory of the ecomuseum. For centuries this tufa stone was widely used by local people for home-building, as well as for the traditional “infernot”, due to the large quantities of stone found in the area. ‘Infernots’ are small rooms burrowed in the Pietra da Cantoni, usually under the houses, the courtyards and the streets, which are particularly suitable for preserving wine. The Head Office of the ecomuseum is in the Comune (Town Hall) of Cella Monte.
