Wine and food

With over 370 traditional agri-food products, food and wine are great protagonists of the new tourism development model of Piemonte. The culture of good living, the inspiring principle of an offer based on quality and aimed at an increasingly demanding tourist clientele attentive to details, has found in the exceptional level of typical Piemonte products and in the richness of the subalpine culinary tradition a major cornerstone and an extraordinary value to promote.

In the last twenty years, agriculture in Piemonte focused on the specialisation of prestigious typical products: from the great red wines (Barolo and Barbaresco in the first place) to Asti’s white and sparkling wines; from the hazelnut Tonda Gentile di Langa to Alba’s White Truffle.

This evolution has been accompanied by a profound cultural growth of the primary sector, of catering activities, but also of the public. Bra was the birthplace of Slow Food, the international association promoting the culture of local food and wine, which has 70,000 members spread across more than 50 countries: its showcase is the Salone del Gusto, organised every two years in Turin.

The food and wine tradition of Piemonte enjoys international fame, so much so that in the rankings of restaurants and in industry guides, the region always occupies the first places. A success that is due to the skill of the chefs, masters in mixing the flavours of tradition with those of the new cuisine, but also to the certified quality of Piemonte’s products. The food and wine primary position of Piemonte also includes a high educational level: the Castello di Pollenzo hosts the Wine Bank and the first University of Gastronomic Sciences.
