TEATRO COCCIA DI NOVARA

Built to a design by Giuseppe Oliverio, after the demolition of the Teatro Morelli, which had become too small and no longer satisfied the town’s requirements, the theatre was opened in 1888 by the young Arturo Toscanini. The main façade, with its classic, symmetrical arrangement, features a large arcade supported by columns made of Baveno granite which also extends to the remaining sides of the building. Inside, the auditorium is horseshoe shaped, with three circles and a spacious gallery supported by cast iron columns decorated with gilded swans. Recent restoration work has brought it back to its original splendour and it is one of the most active theatres, not only in Piemonte, but also in Italy, staging numerous artistic projects: opera, operetta, ballet, musical, drama, jazz, cabaret and special events.
