TORRE E CASTELLO

Grasping the hill that separates the two Bormida valleys, Roccaverano is a town made up of ancient stone houses and by the ruins of a castle that, in times past, was its bastion. The original building consisted of a huge structure with a long and rectangular layout while the tower, 30 meters high and with a 26.50 meter circumference, was built with even blocks of sandstone place horizontally. The defensive function is clearly evident from the thickness of the walls where an underground passage opened up that led from the interior to the exterior of the structure. On the top of the tower, one can see three orders of small suspended arches, each of which is topped by a saw tooth ornamental motif. Seven meters up, the tower has a room that was once connected to a gallery located on the structure’s second floor. Between the walls of the castle and the tower, a park has been dug out which is open to the public, while recent restorations have allowed for better use of the structure with the option of going up into the tower to enjoy a very striking view.
